Artist Statement

I paint landscapes, still lifes and portraits. Like all figurative painters I am concerned with noticing intensely what is actually out there in the world. Selection and interpretation as well as underlying structure and harmony are more important to me than photographic realism.
Drawing is the starting off point in my paintings. I like the sense of limitless potential in simple, traditional materials. I always carry a sketchbook and will draw anything that strikes me as interesting, or even outstandingly ordinary.
Animals present special challenges because they are rarely still. You often have to work on a few drawings moving from one to the other.
Natural objects nearly always figure in my still lifes. Even the most mundane objects become more interesting under observation often suggesting poetic and dramatic associations.
A session of painting or drawing tunes up your perceptions - you seem to see more.
